Man arrested after shooting in Westcott neighborhood

Syracuse Police Department officers responded to a shooting at 104 Judson St. at around 8:17 p.m. on Tuesday.

The Syracuse Police Department on Friday night arrested a suspect in the murder of a 23-year-old man who died after being shot Tuesday in the Westcott neighborhood.

Jerry Murray, the victim, was pronounced dead Thursday, SPD Spokesperson Sgt. Matt Malinowski said in a statement. Police arrested Michael Grant, 23, Friday night. Grant is accused of first-degree robbery and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers responded to a shooting at 104 Judson St. at around 8:17 p.m. on Tuesday, Malinowski said in a statement to The Daily Orange. Upon arrival, officers found a Murray, who was shot in the midsection. Murray was transported to Upstate University Hospital in critical condition.

The shooting is the fourth to occur near the University Neighborhood in the past 30 days.



SPD found multiple bullet casings Tuesday afternoon on Meadowbrook Drive and Euclid Avenue after officers responded to a shots fired call. The bullets hit a house and a car, according to a press release from SPD. The investigation is ongoing.

Two men in the area died after being shot on Oct. 23. Stephen Phelps-Martans, 37, was shot on the 300 block of Westcott Street and Hakeem Phillips, 31, was shot on the 2000 block of East Fayette Street. The locations of the two shootings were a 10 minute walk apart.

Both men were transported in serious condition to Upstate University Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
