Syracuse field hockey dropped four spots to No. 14 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Week 1 Poll, which was released Tuesday morning. After a dominant victory against Lock Haven and a 2-1 win against then-No. 16 Penn State to begin its season, SU was shut out against then-No. 14 Ohio State Sunday. It was the first time the Orange suffered a shutout since Sept. 15, 2023.
Syracuse had 512 points on the Preseason Poll, but it only received 389 points this week. The Orange’s four-spot drop was the steepest decline on this week’s poll. Meanwhile, Ohio State moved up six spots to No. 8, the highest increase.
The Buckeyes gave Syracuse its most difficult challenge of the year on Sunday when they capitalized and scored on 5-of-11 shot attempts. OSU also received five penalty corners and scored one, while SU was held to just three penalty corners, all of which were unsuccessful. With defender Bo van Kempen missing the matchup against the Buckeyes, SU was without its leading goal scorer.
Syracuse will attempt to get back in the win column with a two-game weekend coming up. The Orange will face Northeastern on Friday and Lafayette on Sunday, both of which will be at home.
